Jozu is a huge man, very muscular, broad-chested, with thick armor, and dark skin, called a giant by Crocodile. Even when standing in a stooped position, he was about twice as tall as Crocodile. He has a long face with a black stripe-like pattern for his beard and hairstyle. His legs are relatively thin compared to his muscular arms. He looked tough in battle and had a constant frown on his face. The dark armor he wears and his hairstyle closely resembles that of an Aztec warrior, with the shoulder pads being dark red (the bolts were later changed to gray). On his chest he has a green quiz, the front and back of which are connected by a metal cord that covers his collarbone. The color of the cuirass is then changed to a rusty red color. Around her waist was a large ornate gold sash, worn over what appeared to be a green skirt similar to that worn by the Aztecs, with gold trim near the hem. He also wore what appeared to be large gold and black inlaid shoes or boots and matching black encrusted pants. During the battle at the summit, he lost his right arm when Aokiji froze it while Jozu's attention was diverted from him, causing his limbs to become extremely fragile and fracture as soon as he fell.
Twenty-two years ago, Jozu wore a black tanktop and red sash instead of armor and had a much thinner neck, but otherwise looked the same as now. In the past, when Whitebeard declared Fish-Man Island as his territory, Jozu was seen wearing a different tanktop design.
When Jozu was a child, he was rather round and chubby. He had chubby little feet, and wore a large black outfit overall, with round buttons. Her hair was still in a ball on top of her head, but there was less hair.

As the commander of the Whitebeard Pirates' 3rd division, Jozu holds authority over all crew members ranked lower than the commander. A seasoned veteran, he has been a part of the Whitebeard Pirates for at least three decades, since the time of Gold Roger. In terms of combat, Jozu is one of the toughest, honorable men of his crew, able to fight and defend against Marine Warlords and Marine admirals. The division he leads specializes in combat, acting as the vanguard for the rest of the crew. Jozu is also shown to be strong-willed, remaining unaffected by the powerful Haoshoku Haki blast unleashed by Emperor Shanks.

Jozu further has great endurance, shown when he takes, point blank when not in diamond mode, a sandstorm that is unleashed by Crocodile (though the others are meant to get him and Doflamingo out of Crocodile's way rather than as an actual attack) and appear unscathed despite being positioned in the eye of the storm. Later, Jozu was completely frozen by Aokiji, losing an arm in the process. Even though he was helpless, he was still alive.
Devil Fruit
Jozu with most of his body covered in diamonds. Jozu ate the Kira Kira no Mi, a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that allows him to turn every part of his body into diamonds, earning him the nickname "Diamond Jozu". With this power, Jozu is used as his crew's "diamond shield", protecting them from the front.
When transformed, Jozu's attack power and physical defense are significantly supported by the toughness of the diamond body

Jozu proved himself to be a proficient Busoshoku Haki user when he managed to attack and injure a Logia user on two separate occasions. He launched a devastating surprise attack against Crocodile which knocked him far back and then attacked Admiral Aokiji, who shattered his icy form and caused the admiral to bleed from his mouth.
