Why do Eid Prayers are held in the open field

Eid Al-Fitr, 1 Shawwal 1443 Hijri has just passed. Eid prayer is also busy again this year, after two years ago it was impossible to perform Eid prayers at all both in the field and in the mosque because of the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic. Last year, some Muslims who were at level-2 were able to perform limited Eid prayers,

This year, with the crowds of Eid prayers in the field, there are some parties who question why Eid prayers are held in the field, not only in mosques.

We can re-read the hadith of the Prophet Muhammad regarding the implementation of Eid prayers, namely:

From Abu Sa'id al-Khudri radhiallahu'anhu he said: "The Messenger of Allah sallallaahu 'alaihi Wasallam went out (to perform prayers) on the holidays of 'Eid al-Fitr and 'Eid al-Adha to the field, so the first thing he did was pray 'Eid , then after he finished he sallallaahu 'alaihi Wasallam stood (to preach) in front of the Muslims and they (still) sat in their rows..."

Then the sunnah continued to be carried out by the Muslims until the Age (government) of Marwan bin al-Hakam. [Sahih Hadith narrated by al-Bukhari (no. 913) and Muslim (no. 889)].

Imam an-Nawawi said: "This hadith is a proof for scholars who say that it is advisable to go out into the field to perform the Eid prayer and that performing it in the field is more important than carrying it out in the mosque. This opinion is practiced by Muslims in almost all cities , except for the residents of Mecca..." [The Book of "Sharh Sahih Muslim" (6/177)]

Imam Ibn Hajar al-'Asqalani said: "This hadith is used as an argument that it is recommended to go out to the shahra' (field) to perform the Eid prayer and that it is more important than carrying it out in the mosque, because the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, always performed it on the ground. roomy, even though the virtue (prayer) in his mosque (Nabawi Mosque) is very large". [The Book of "Fathul Baari" (2/450)]

The wisdom (reason) of the residents of the City of Mecca to continue to pray 'Eid in the Haram Mosque is because of the presence of the Kaaba in the Grand Mosque, where praying in the Haram Mosque is better than a hundred thousand prayers in other mosques. Also because of the difficulty of finding shahra' (fields) in Mecca, because the land has many hills and valleys, making it difficult for residents to get out (looking for open land). That's why the 'Eid prayer in Mecca is still carried out in the Haram Mosque."

As for the 'residents of the city of Medina' then the law is like any other city, because a large field of land is found there.

Shaykh Muhammad bin Saleh al-'Utsaimin said: "The city of Medina (in this case) is the same as other cities, it is recommended for its residents to go out to the shahra' (field) to perform the 'Eid prayer, this is more important. And it is makruh (not preferred in Islamic law) for them to do it in the Prophet's Mosque, unless there is a reason (justified in Islamic law)..." [The book "asy-Syarhul mumti' 'ala zaadil mustaqni'" (2/387)]

The scholars of Ahlus Sunnah explain some of the great wisdoms of the 'Eid prayer in the field (Source: https://muslim.or.id/26037):

First Wisdom; To show the great syi'ar of Islam and the symbol of the height of the noble religion of Allah.

Shaykhul Islam Ibn Taimiyah said: "Eid prayers are among the greatest symbols of Islam".

Imam Ibnul Haajj al-Maliki said: "...The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) prescribed the Eid prayer in the field to show the symbols of Islam".

Second Wisdom; As a reason to unite the hearts of the Muslims and collect their sentences, with them praying together in a large field behind one imam.

Shaykh Ahmad Shakir said: "Then this sunnah of the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi Wasallam, namely performing the Eid prayer in the field, has a very great and high wisdom (namely) so that Muslims have two days in a year (Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Fitr). Eid al-Adha) for all the inhabitants of the city gathered on that day, both men, women and children. They all presented themselves to Allah with their hearts, with one sentence and prayed (together) behind the same imam.

They recite takbir (say 'Allahu akbar'/Allah is great), perform tahlil (say 'laa ilaha illallah'/There is no true god but Allah) and pray to Him sincerely, as if they have one heart.

In fact, to unite Muslims on this Eid, Rasulullah SAW ordered the women (all) to go out to the Eid prayer, he even ordered women who were menstruating and secluded girls to go out to the Eid prayer. [HSR al-Bukhari (no. 344) and Muslim (no. 890)]

So when Rasulullah SAW ordered (all) women to go out (to the place of prayer 'Eid) means that he prescribed the prayer 'Eid in the field to show the symbols of Islam".

Thus, carrying out the Eid prayer in the field is in accordance with the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad and this is something agreed upon by the Imams of the Ahlus Sunnah from a scientific review. In addition, performing the Eid prayer in the field contains many benefits and wisdom which the majority will not realize by being carried out in one or many mosques.

And, by praying Eid in the field, it shows how happy and joyful the Muslims are to gather together with the abundance of Allah's blessings for them, so that the day of 'Eid really becomes a holiday for them...
